Only 4 weeks until L-Day, or the day we Leave.

Time to put everything in order, one more time, the route and the stuff we bring.

The Route:

We start in New York, New York. We’ll stay here for 3 days before we head to Cleveland. We’re invited to attend a wedding there. This is also the reason why we leave a couple days sooner. 1st August was our original date of departure.

We’ll fly to Chicago after a couple of days, here we’ll visit friends as well an visit the city. Something we’d done before in Cleveland.

Around 3rd August we’ll “hijack” the New York-to-Mexico City plane in Chicago.

After 5 days in Mexico City, where go on a trip down memory lane with Laila, we head of to Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan peninsula. Here we’ve booked a small hotel and we take a diving course. We’re gonna need that for the rest of the trip.

Form Playa del Carmen we’ll head south, then east and then back to the capital to celebrate the independeance and Laila her birthday. This will take about a month…

Then we’ll head back to the US. In Los Angels and San Fransisco live some friend that we will visit. This will take only 2 weeks, we don’t to stay to long in the US due to the costs.

Form LA we take a long flight to New Zealand. Here the real adventure will start as neiter of us have been here before.
The plan is to rent bikes in Aucland and then head south and take the train back up again. We plan to work here and there to make some money. We intend to enjoy nature as mush as possible…

From Aucland to Sydney, Australia. Here we intend to buy a car and drive around the country, counter clock wise. Theis will be around a 12.000 miles drive and will takes us through all the states. We’ll visit the big cities as well as smaller places. Diving on the Great Barrier Reef and work at a kangaroo shelter. We’ll try and make some money here as well, just keep the budget within limits.

Once back in Sydney we’ll sell the car and fly to Bangkok, Thailand.
After a little holiday here we’ll travel through Laos to Vietnam. All this will be done with public transport. We’ll take the train from Hanoi to Ho Chi Min City and go straight through Cambodia back to Thailand to have another little holiday before we head back to Holland.

We hope to accomplish all this within 365 days…

The gear:

We bought 2 Macpac backpacks and a smal daypack. Next to that we have fast drying towels, a musqitonet, sleeping bags, a sarong, a first aid kit, sunscreen, insect repelent, binoculars, a videocamera, a photocamera (with a little tripod), a PDA, sunglasses, pocket knifes, watches, a compass and some other odds and ends.

Well.., maybe a post or two before we leave, but then it really “go” time…
